Special Academy
The Umeed Special Academy, located in Landhi, Karachi,
is a project of a non-profit NGO "Association for Special Children
Rehabilitation" (ASCR), established by Mr. Shamshad Khan in
March 2001. This school has been providing education and training
to mentally and physically challenged children and young adults
aged 5 to 20 years, all of whom come from poor and underprivileged
homes. The school runs on donations. Lack of funds and the deteriorating
conditions at Umeed Academy compelled the management to keep the
enrollment of children to fewer than 35.
In June 2006, members of RCKSM were invited to
visit the campus of Umeed Academy. They found the Academy to be
lacking in facilities and equipment, without which the faculty was
at a loss to provide the special children with proper education
and therapy.
In December 2007, RCKSM took on the task of upgrading
the facilities at Umeed Academy. Through a US$ 18,000 Matching Grant
with Rotary Club Delhi Chanakyapuri, and donations from Rotary Club
Wagga Wagga, Australia, and anonymous donors, RCKSM has brought
about a remarkable transformation at Umeed Special Academy.
All old desks and chairs were replaced with colourful
new chairs and tables. Their room was now clean with brightly painted
walls, new furnishings, whiteboards, soft boards, and shelves lined
with games and toys. What fascinated them the most was the new computer
lab. This was not all, outside more surprises awaited them –
jungle-gym, swings and slides. All this and much more were possible
thanks to the help of the Rotary Club of Karachi Sunset Millennium
(RCKSM), along with its international partners Rotary Club Delhi
Chanakyapuri and Rotary Club Wagga Wagga, Australia, and the many
private anonymous donors. |
